Who are we?
An immersion in a palatine legion of the Late Roman Empire
Each project has a unique story.
Founded in 2018 by Guillaume Marty, the HERCULIANI IUNIORES association is dedicated to rigorously reconstructing the eponymous Roman legion during the Late Roman Empire in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD.
This approach, aimed at bringing the past to life, is based first on the study of archaeological, iconographic, and textual sources related to historical research, followed by experimentation to offer the public a panorama of the daily civil and military life of the Roman legionary.
Its members are mostly authors, graduates in ancient history, and enthusiasts of Late Antiquity. They are based in northern France and Alsace, as well as in Belgium.
Why "HERCULIANI IUNIORES"?
The name of our group is inspired by an elite unit of the Late Roman army.
TheHerculiani Iunioreswere a Roman palatine legion "LEGIO PALATINA", an elite unit directly under the command of the "MAGISTER MILITUM PRAESENTALIS", a command close to the Emperor.
